24nov23: davie update

the day are sincerely humbled by the reaction to our ‘sacred planet?’ album, and cd sales, especially in these difficult times and with the album being on spotify.

many have asked about gigs which are proving pretty problematic as in addition to davie breaking his wrist, early summer, he also has a hand condition called dupuytrens. this is a condition that causes the fingers to curl and stiffen and sometimes be pretty much immovable, great news for a guitarist!we’re working hard to overcome this and hope to have some gignews in the new year.

we have five XL ‘sacred planet?’ tees left and are offering up five ‘sacred bundles’. an XL tee, CD plus badge and sticker for £25 inc. p&p. £20 if you’re local and we can deliver.

love, the day.

20oct23: On my radio

the day are humbly chuffed with reaction to the 'sacred planet?' album.

we've received positive reviews and airplay from around the world, the really good news is the variety of tracks stations are choosing to play.

we were even featured artistes on paul groovy's radio show, see poster

subsequent to finishing recording of our album we were rocked early summer when davie broke his wrist.

our only concern was for him but obviously that put a hold on rehearsals for live shows although we're back at it now and almost at a point when we can hopefully book some shows. watch this space and thanks for the support!

It's finally here - the first album since 2005's 'Everything Matters' will be released on the Detour imprint 'Only Fit For The Bin' (OFFTB055) on 22nd September 2023.

Press release

"Red Letter Day formed in 1984 and roamed the earth for 24 years. Always with me on vocals and Daryn on drums, I hope its fair to say that each incarnation had it's highlights.

We released eight singles and six albums, toured the UK and Europe, had our records played on Radio 1 and recorded a session for the legendary John Peel. Played with many of my favourite bands. Never realised my aim of doing the band fulltime but not for the want of trying! I stopped in 2008 as for me the effort and grief was outweighing creativity and fun.

I often thought I had unfinished business and it was the first covid lockdown that got me revisiting my lyric book in 2020. I soon spoke to Daryn about making a new album, original guitarist, Davie, was signed up! Lisa had got in touch with me about playing bass but tragically died in December of that year. Cue Mickey to recreate the line-up from 1987 that recorded the 'Take Me In Your Arms' single, a favourite of Janice Longs. We recorded 'Sacred Planet' in five enjoyable bite sized chunks over about eighteen months from November 2021 to April 2023. Mission accomplished but the beat goes on.... Ade, September 2023

Fourteen tracks: The Zone; Coming Home; Different Worlds; Student Room; My Vindication; April Back; Passing Out; Little Universe; Ghosts; Killer Kult; Brightest Star; Fluid Thoughts; Sacred Planet?; 4 O’clock Somewhere

17apr23: In The Can

The weekend of 15/16 April saw The Day back at www.oldblacksmiths.com with Magic Ben to record the final three songs for our forthcoming Sacred Planet? album. Fair to say we're really pleased how The Zone, Passing Out & the title track came out.

So our recording journey that started November 2021 is now complete! Loads of exciting stuff for us to do, confirm a label, release date, artwork etc.

Plus although it's not easy with our logistics we're really up for doing some more support slots.

Thanks, as always, to everyone who's shown interest in our journey so far.

Love, The Day

18apr2022: Album update + GIG NEWS!

The Day are humbled by people that have shown interest and given us positive feedback  thus far….So this is where we currently are: We’ve so far recorded five tracks for our proposed ‘Sacred Planet?’ album, that we’re more than pleased with, and are booked into The Old Blacksmiths Studios 11th. & 14th. June to record the next three with the great Magic Ben.

Micky2022.jpg

Our target is 14 songs and for the album to be released this time next year…Really thought we’d be able to do a quality live set by now but with our other commitments and logistics we’re not there yet.

No rush, our whole ethos is to be creative in an enjoyable way and we are booked to support Nosebleed at The Loft, Southsea for those wonderful people at Pompey Punk N' Roll 22nd October which, scarily, will come round soon enough!

Photo is from 1986 taken in Brighton before our show at a really good venue in the arches. This was a year before Mike joined for his 1 gig, 1 single first stint with The Day, so features Keith from our first line-up. So there's also an up to date pic of Micky to make up!

01mar2022: 4 O'clock Somewhere

The weekend of 12-13th February saw the Day back at Old Blacksmiths Studio to record three more tracks for our proposed 'Sacred Planet?' album which we hope to release this time next year.

13dec2021: First new RLD recording in over a decade

In late November, the four members of the the reformed Red Letter Day got together in the studio to lay down the first of what is hoped to become an albums worth of new tracks.

The band plan to record the album, provisionally titled 'Sacred Earth', over the course of 2022.

The theory behind doing it in bite sized chunks is to maximise our enjoyment, creativity and to keep everything fresh, rather than the slog of getting down fourteen drum tracks and working from there.

The first recording to be made available from the first session is 'Student Room', which is available via our YouTube library as well as right here

19oct2021: Thirteen years later

After 13 years there is some Day action to report!

The first lockdown around May 2020 inspired me to start writing lyrics again with a seemingly crazy idea to make another Red Letter Day album.

Lisa, from the 2006-7 line-up, got intouch with a jokey ‘bass player available’ facebook message.

Of course it would be Daryn on drums! But what about a guitar player?

As this was kinda ‘unfinished business’ it seemed right to sound out, Davie, our original guitarist from 1984-9 who joined the three of us at a meeting in October to discuss the possibility of writing, rehearsing and recording.

It was a great night but then a second lockdown happened and tragically Lisa died in early December….

This awful news left the three of us devastated and numb and it wasn’t until a couple of months later that we considered The Day again when I met up with Micky Jeffery who had stood in on bass for one gig and the recording of the ‘Take Me In Your Arms’ single back in 1987.

Micky was delighted to join and this really cemented the ‘unfinished business’ vibe although covid dictated that we would not rehearse until 26th. May 2021 at Blacksmiths, Portsmouth, which will also be the venue for our first recording session, 27th. & 28th. November.

I think it’s fair to say rehearsals and writing have gone well with material to stand along the three songs, never released, that we have reworked from all those years ago.

So where does this take us? Who knows? It’s all about us now, having fun and trying to be creative. Writing, recording and doing our album.

Who will be interested? Us! But we’ll be so humbled if others want some Day Action! Fair to say a record label wouldn’t go amiss!

Live action? Again, if we want to and it suits.

TBH, jumping in a transit to go to Bradford or spending three weeks in the Czech Republic is not on the agenda!

Watch this space, Ade (October 2021)
